Enjoy Tokyo In Only
The Finest Hotels
Tokyo is the capital and largest city
of a wealthy and fully modern country, so it should not be surprising
that
Tokyo hotels offer every a wide range
of facilities and prices to visitors. Aside from the familiar chains
of 3 and 4 star tourist and/or family hotels, and the 5 star corporate
hotels, Tokyo has several other uniquely Japanese options.
Business Hotels are a
common sight among
Tokyo hotels, and feature Western
style rooms that would rate 2 or 3 stars in the US or Europe. The
rooms range in price from $40 to $90 per night.
More charming are the Ryokan, or traditional Japanese inn, which are a
unique hotel format and found only in Japan. Many
Tokyo hotels are Ryokans. Staying in
a Ryokan brings with it the opportunity to experience something like
the customary lifestyle of the Japanese. Rates are based on what is
called “cost per person,” and vary widely. Prices between $60 and $300
per night are all within the standard range.
Another uniquely Japanese hotel is the Minshuku, and these are usually
family run operations. They are roughly analogous to a home stay bed
and breakfast, and provide a bed plus one or two meals. The nightly
rates range between $40 and $100 per person. Japanese Pensions are
similar to the Minshuku, but are decorated in a western style, and are
priced between $40 and $120.
The Capsule Hotel is a famous and peculiarly Japanese institution,
providing only a bed to the customer. They are mostly for male
visitors who need a place to sleep for the night before continuing
their travels the following day. Their main virtue is that they are
cheap: $30 to $40. Below the Capsule Hotel is the budget dormitory,
which is a lot like hostels. One shares a bunk with anywhere between
half a dozen and two dozen other people, at a cost of between $15 and
$30 per night.
Love hotels are not for tourists or businessmen. As Japan is a country
where most adults live with their families into their twenties and
even thirties, they are for couples who need a private place away from
their families. Rates are by the hour, and a few hours will cost
between $60 and $120.
Finally, a familiar sight to those used to budget travel in Buddhist
countries are Japan’s Temple Lodgings. The fees for these are very
modest, although some temples require chores from visitors.
